Tool Filename Description

DHCP Manager dhcpadmin.exe Enables the user at the NT Workstation to administrate the DHCP service running on the NT Server 4.0. This lets the user configure default, global, and scope settings.
Remote Access
Administrator
rasadmin.exe Allows the NT workstation to administer the RAS server on a computer running Windows NT.
Remote Boot rplmgr.exe Allows the NT workstation to Manager configure the Remoteboot service on NT Server 4.0.
Server Manager srvmgr.exe Allows the NT Workstation machine to administer not only the NT domain but also NT computers inside that domain.
System Policy
Editor
poledit.exe Allows the NT Workstation user to edit policies and thus to be able to edit registry settings on any computer in the domain.
User Manager
for Domains
usrmgr.exe Allows the NT Workstation to change user properties—passwords, access times, share rights, right to change password, domain logon scripts—as well as group rights—memberships, logon scripts, and so forth—for NT-based systems on the domain, or a multiple of domains to which the NT Workstation user has rights. In addition, trusts to other domains can be configured from this software.
WINS Manager winsadmin.exe Configures the NT Workstation to administer the WINS (Windows Internet Name Service) that is operating on the Windows NT 4.0 Server.

These pieces of software help the administrator by not tying him down to just operating from the Windows NT Server. Now, any workstation that has these installed will allow him to change user rights, add users, change the desktop and Control Panel settings, and add security logon scripts to the entire domain, all from within the access of one workstation and without having to go to the Windows NT Server each time these processes are needed in an office environment.

9.2.4. Windows 95 Client-Based Server Tools

The Windows 95 configuration is different from the minimal Windows 95 configuration. This is because where Windows 95 normally can be set up with a 386 CPU and 4MB of RAM, the minimum for running the NT Server 4.0 Administration Tools is a 486/33 with at least 8MB of RAM. Thus, the requirements for a Windows 95 computer to run Administration Tools for NT Server 4.0 are

Client for 486/33 or better CPU
  8MB of RAM
3MB of free hard disk space on the system partition
Microsoft Networks installed on the Windows 95 machine

The installation of these tools is also different from that of the NT Workstation. From Control Panel on the Windows 95 machine, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon to bring up the dialog box in Figure 9.6. The Control Panel can be found by several ways, such as Explorer, opening the My Computer Desktop icon, or from Settings on the Start Menu options.

Figure 9.6.  Using the Windows setup option from the Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel.

Clicking the Have Disk button in the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box brings up the Install From Disk dialog box, shown in Figure 9.7.

Place the Windows NT Server 4.0 CD-ROM in your computer’s CD-ROM drive (or a shared CD-ROM drive). Under Copy Manufacturer’s Files From in the Install From Disk dialog box, type (CD-ROM drive Letter): \Clients\Srvtools\Win95 and then click OK. Click Windows NT Server Tools and Install to install the Server tools to the C:\Srvtools directory, which you can add to your Path statement in Autoexec.bat. Restart the Windows 95 computer to complete the installation of the Server Tools for Windows 95.
